This 21st century beauty invention has helped us save time over the years, But Is it helping us now?

Now we know more about the facial wipes! Here are a few hints and tips on how standard wipes can add to your skin problems.

Facial wipes contain lots of preservatives and harsh chemicals. They are also full of alcohol. It’s these chemicals that gives the wipes a slimy and wet texture, and contribute to making our skin drier.

Lots of people are still using them to remove make up. The thing is they are only breaking down the top layer of any oily make up, they are not actually cleansing the skin. Most people are also using them as their only cleansing item. So what’s  the story?

Make up and dirt cling on to the free radicals just like the pollutions do. We have to remove the free radicals properly, as these can speed up the breakdown of collagen. We need collagen to keep our skin healthy and plump looking. By not cleansing the skin properly you will be leaving Bacteria on the skin causing skin complaints, such as dryness, redness, and irritated skin! You may notice more pimples and the skin not as smooth. You will be properly not be properly exfoliating the skin.

When we are using the wipes we also tend to apply more pressure to the skin, especially around the eye area, this area is where our skin is more delicate and needs less pressure. Harsh products and too much rubbing around the eyes can cause irritation and fine lines in wrinkles.

Let’s talk about the environmental factors. We use eleven billion wipes a year! That’s a huge number! Where are they all going? They are damaging to the environment, and they will stay in the eco system for 500 years! Unlike toilet paper that goes in our water system they can’t be flushed down the loo! They may feel like paper but they contain plastic. If binned they will end up in the land fill.

So what are the alternatives?

A good cleanser/facewash, there are reusable pads and bamboo cloths available. It takes minutes to have a better cleansing routine, at the same time as a bit of selfcare. Your skin and your mind will thank you for it.

So ideas with what to do with your old wipes! #binthewipes
